I Need Your Blood

Picture of a female vampire

After covering the genres ‘teacher-student‘, ‘rock stars‘ and ‘bimbos,’ I thought I was done describing my genres. I soon discovered there is one more, and it is an important one to me too: Vampires.

No, not the sparkly ones from the Twilight universe, but the blood-craving sex maniacs from the True Blood realm. When I discovered that TV-show, a whole new world opened up to me. I loved the figure of the vampire so much. It was the perfect match for me.

I love everything to do with fantasy, but I’ve never managed to do the whole world-building thing correctly, and so the paranormal genre is perfect for me. I can still use supernatural beings with superpowers, but I don’t have to create an entire universe with a magic system that makes sense and with thousands of years of history. Instead, it gave me the chance to focus on what I loved most: a dark erotic, blood-sucking creature.

The Loveable Kind

Like I said, True Blood exposed me to the ‘new’ vampire. One who was able to communicate with humans, build relationships with them, and feast on them without taking their lives per se. The vampire I liked best on the show was Eric Northman. His entire being exhumed sexuality, power, and dominance. The only other vampires I had encountered before that time, were in ‘Interview with a Vampire,’ where all my friends doted on Brad Pitt. But still, that movie did not impact me as much as True Blood did.

The Hottest Scene from True Blood

Brutal and Dark

The immediate inspiration to write a vampire story myself came from a whole different corner. One night I watched a Twilight movie on television. After seeing sweet vampires live off of animal blood and still being able to walk in the sun, I figured I could do better myself. Around the same time, I went to a telling of a story of Edgar Allen Poe, which gave me the exact right dark and gloomy sentiment for the atmosphere. Then, to top it off, one of my favorite bands had the main singer show off his best vampire-laugh, and I was set. I had to write my own vampire story. And what I loved most was how mean I could make them. Every ounce of evilness I had inside me, I poured into those stories.

Vamps have Disappeared

Today, the age of the vampire is almost over. There are a few shows on Netflix that show them, but it’s not like it used to be. Sometimes there’s a vampire, sometimes a shifter, sometimes a werewolf, but it doesn’t have an impact on me like it did with True Blood. So honestly, I don’t have any plans for writing anything vampire related right now. It doesn’t help that I can’t watch True Blood where I live. I had a subscription to HBO for a while, but it didn’t have that show at that time, so I soon canceled my subscription. And of course, it’s not on Netflix.

Dark and Wild Sex

Yet, when I think back at it, I miss the world of vampires. I love the trope with a vampire who just needs to kill, who needs human blood to sustain his own existence. And who loves having wild sex, cause what else will you do when you have an eternity to fill? I love being able to write such a dark and evil character. One day I’ll go back to it. I just need to find the right circumstances and find the right trigger. And a willing female who wants to sacrifice herself and offer her neck to the dominating fanged creature.

  1. There is something compelling and just damn hot about vampires – I can remember when I first read ‘interview with a vampire’ and then my fave of that series “Lestat” – i was pulled into another world – and loved it
Am a big fan of Poe too

    1. I loved reading the Twilight books. They were the first I read after a Literature class at the university, so it was a breath of fresh air, reading for fun instead for analysis. And I think I prefer the books over the movies. But True Blood vamps trump it all ?

  2. I love vampires. Supernatural story lines pull me in whether it be vampires, werewolves, witches, etc. But vampires always seem to have a certain sex appeal to them so I can definitely see why you like them so much.

Have you ever watched Vampire Diaries or the Originals? I honestly prefer the Originals over Vampire Diaries since it’s not a high school setting and it’s about the original vampires and their legacy.
