Okay, I admit this was an easy find, but I honestly did search within my usual metal and rock genres and came up empty. I chose this song, or actually this full soundtrack of the 1994 Disney movie ‘The Lion King.’ I have many memories of both the movie and the soundtrack.

A Fun Distraction

The animated movie ‘The Lion King’ was released in 1994, which was a tumultuous time in my life. My parents had just divorced, and I had just begun secondary school. We weren’t rich at home; we were just a middle-class family. I don’t know if we went to see this movie in the theatre. That wasn’t something we regularly did. My mother hated cinemas, and honestly, I don’t know if there even was a cinema in the town where I grew up. We might have had this video on VHS, the European VCR. But even that I’m not sure of, Disney videos were costly.

Timeless

My family and I loved the movie. We thought it was both emotional and funny. Even today, my husband will hold up one of our cats like they hold up Simba to show him his land. Or we speak the name ‘Mufasa’ and shudder in disgust.

Fun Memories

We had the movie’s soundtrack on CD during my teenage years, and we would play it while doing the dishes. We did this as a family, so my brother and I were always goofing around and annoying one another during the chore. That’s also the reason why I still, to this day, know the CD by heart.

Philip Margo

In other related news, Philip Margo, the singer of ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight,’ passed away a little over a week ago on November 13th 2021. My husband notified me of this news after I had written this post, and I didn’t want to change my choice. I do think it’s a special song, released in 1961 as a rework from two other artists. I still want to end this post with the “no worries” message from the lyrics. Seize the day and have fun where you can. You never know when it’s going to end.
