According to this week’s prompt, I chose the Dutch song ‘Meer Dan Een Ander’ by the band ‘Van Dik Hout.’ When you read the translation of the lyrics, generated by Google, you won’t find the word ‘other.’ That’s because the Dutch word ‘ander’ is a literal translation of ‘other.’ The literal translation of this title would be ‘more than an other.’
Okay, with that out of the way, why did I choose this song? I’ve loved it since day one. The lyrics are very poetic. I love how simple the words are and how easy the text is, yet the message is vital.
‘There is no one more silent than me about you.
Because I don’t have the words now that I need them.’
The depth of love this singer describes for his loved one is without bounds. You can read it as creepy or as highly romantic. Either way, it’s an intense form of love. You can hear in the singer’s voice how much it pains him, how he had wished things were different if she hadn’t lied, if he hadn’t run away.
‘There is no one who will lie about you more than me.
Because I don’t know the truth now that you lied.’
I love how the song ends with: ‘There is no one more silent than me about you.’ It makes it such a strong ending which I, as a writer, can appreciate.
How does the song pertain to my personal life? The song was released in 1994, though my memories are from almost ten years later. I was in a relationship with a partner who didn’t have my best interests in mind, as I discussed in this post. Together with him, we listened to a lot of music, and I guess this one too came by one day.
I loved the emotionality of the performer. I think it’s ironic this song spoke to me at that time. I was in love with this partner. I wanted to dedicate my life to him. He didn’t reciprocate. I don’t even think he was faithful to me at that time, though I ignored it best I could.
Now I’m not a romantic person, not at all. I’m more the Dutch way: act normal because that’s crazy enough. Even with the people, I’m in love with, I see their flaws. Okay, maybe not at day one, but I’ll discover and acknowledge them soon enough. I also don’t think there’s only one soulmate for everybody. I think you can connect with different people at different points in your life. And yes, multiple people can be in love with the same person. So who am I to say I love you more than anyone else?
But despite my rationality, this song speaks to me. It touches me emotionally, both through the words and from the way it is sung. So even though you can’t understand the words, do listen to the clip. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.

Sorry, but I didn’t like this music. Some kind of dissonance between music and vocals.
